
The College of Agriculture at the University of Basra organized a practical training course for female farmers from villages in the northern districts of Basra Governorate. The course was sponsored by the President of the University of Basra, Professor Dr. Muhannad Jawad Al-Asadi, and supervised by the Dean of the College of Agriculture, Professor Dr. Sarmed Ghazi Muhammad Al-Shawi. The course was managed by the Agricultural Advisory Office and college professors. The course aims to strengthen the framework of cooperation between the college, agricultural departments, and the Union of Agricultural Cooperative Societies in Basra.
The Dean of the College of Agriculture supervised the practical training day at the college's facilities, including the research station, the animal field, and hydroponics. Al-Shawi highlighted the college's readiness, with all its departments and laboratories, to provide services, expertise, laboratory analyses, and all the latest scientific developments in the agricultural sector to farmers. The goal is to keep pace with modern scientific developments, ensuring the well-being of rural women and enabling them to generate adequate income from field cultivation, while mitigating the impact of climate change. The course, presented by Professor Sadiq Jabbar Mohsen, Professor Mohsen Abdul-Hay Dasher, and Professor Salem Ajr Bandar, covered the use and application of modern agricultural technologies in protected agriculture and modern micro-irrigation, the use of modern solar energy in irrigation, the application of hydroponic farming techniques, and livestock breeding methods aimed at mitigating the challenges facing southern Iraq in the face of climate change, including rising temperatures, water scarcity, and high concentrations of salts and pollutants in irrigation water. It also covered the application of solar energy technology and its use in operating irrigation pumps.
