College of Agriculture hosts Dr. Eric Van Zandwijk from the Kingdom of the Netherlands

Within the scientific activities of the College of Agriculture and the Visiting Professor Program, the Department of Soil Sciences and Water Resources hosted Dr. Eric Van Zandwijk from the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the department’s hall today, Sunday 7/11/2021, and gave a scientific lecture entitled “Farming approaches for sustainable agriculture in salt affected area” in which he addressed the problems Which face farmers in Basra governorate due to soil and water salinity and the problem of desertification and how to treat it through planting fenders to reduce the effect of wind erosion and using different types of trees as well as applying appropriate management programs by covering the surface of the soil and reducing evaporation and applying the appropriate irrigation method and the use of drains in a way Correct and in proportion to the extent to which the soil is affected by salt and reduce the use of fungicides, insecticides and weed killers because they affect the microbiology of the soil At the end of the lecture, he pointed out that healthy soil produces a healthy plant that is resistant to diseases and insect infestations and has good productivity At the end of the lecture, Dr. Haifa Jassim Hussein, Head of Soil and Water Resources Department, presented a commemorative shield to the visiting permission
