A PhD thesis was discussed at the College of Agriculture at the University of Basrah (Designing the landscape of the waterfronts of the Shatt Al-Arab in the city of Basra) The thesis included the researcher (Ali Shawqi Abdul Wahed). The research was conducted on the two banks of the Shatt Al-Arab site, which is one of the most important waterfronts in the Basra Governorate. After that, the researcher came up with the development of prior theoretical frameworks to rely on to solve the problem of the place of study in the practical part of the site The thesis aims to identify the application of design criteria and indicators to re-use the water spaces with the local environment, improve the level of afforestation, and develop plans that are ecologically compatible with the site. The thesis concluded that the ecological design is absent in the site, the plant biodiversity is low, the environmental pollution of the air in the area is high, the function is not fulfilled in the place, the pollution of the visual scene, the weakness of the plastic unit and rhythm, and the diversity of materials used in the formation of that facade. The thesis recommended the adoption of local standards for creating the ecological landscape of waterfronts and river banks that are compatible with the local community and changes in the climate, taking into account the foundations of ecological design when forming any other waterfront.
