
Under the patronage of its President, Professor Muhannad Jawad Al-Asadi, the University of Basra is preparing to hold an expanded symposium aimed at presenting proposals, recommendations, and practical solutions to mitigate water scarcity, salinity, and pollution in Basra Governorate.
This initiative is under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Agriculture, Professor Sarmed Ghazi Muhammad Al-Shawi, and the assignment of the Head of the Department of Soil Sciences and Water Resources, Professor Mohsen Abdul-Hay. The symposium is being held in collaboration with the Marine Science Center and the College of Marine Sciences, with the aim of supporting the local and central governments with realistic and applicable solutions.
In this regard, a meeting was held with Al-Asadi, Al-Shawi, and Abdul-Hay to review the preparations for preparing working papers containing technical and scientific solutions applicable in the near term in the governorate. These solutions will be based on research results and scientific foundations derived from field data.
The symposium aims to develop proposals and recommendations that will be submitted to the local government and relevant ministries for rapid implementation, both for immediate and long-term strategic solutions. These pioneering solutions are expected to contribute to mitigating the negative impacts caused by water scarcity and deteriorating water quality on the agricultural, environmental, and industrial sectors in Basra Governorate.
