The College of Agriculture at the University of Basra organized a seminar on leaf spot diseases and the dramatic increase in the number of pathogens in the last five years.
The seminar, presented by Dr. Yahya Ashour Saleh, aimed to identify new species of leaf spot pathogens belonging to the genus Alternaria that have appeared on various plants in the last five years.
The seminar included a presentation on the genera causing leaf spot diseases and a presentation of older species common in the region that appear continuously and have been isolated by researchers and graduate students.
The study concluded that more than 250 species belonging to this genus have been recorded for the first time as pathogens causing leaf spot diseases, and that more than 35 species have been discovered for the first time globally in the last five years.
