The College of Agriculture at the University of Basra organized a specialized scientific workshop entitled "Mitochondrial DNA as a Molecular Tool for Analyzing Genetic Diversity and Evolutionary Relationships in Living Organisms."
The workshop, presented by Dr. Noor Majid Awad and Ms. Zahraa Riyadh Mahmoud (a faculty member at the Computer Center), aimed to highlight the strategic importance of mitochondrial DNA as a vital and precise tool in modern scientific research. It also aimed to introduce its high capacity for revealing genetic variations and deciphering the complex evolutionary relationships between different biological species.
The workshop included an explanation of the unique properties of mitochondrial DNA, the mechanisms for using genetic markers to understand the evolutionary sequence of organisms, and a review of the latest research applications in the biological and agricultural fields, as well as related computational technologies.
The workshop recommended promoting research investment in mitochondrial DNA studies, protecting biodiversity by tracking genetic resources and conserving endangered species, and supporting food security by utilizing these findings to ensure the sustainability of environmental and agricultural resources.
