A doctoral dissertation at the College of Agriculture, University of Basra, investigated the "Estimation of Levels of Some Pollutants in the Water, Sediments, and Two Fish Species of Khor Al-Zubair."
The dissertation, submitted by researcher Ali Wafiq Ali, aimed to estimate and assess organic pollutants, petroleum hydrocarbon pollution, and heavy metal pollution, as well as evaluate the water quality of Khor Al-Zubair using various water quality and pollution indicators. The study involved collecting and analyzing water, sediment, and fish samples, and conducting field and laboratory tests.
The study revealed a significant increase in salinity concentrations and an increase in petroleum hydrocarbon and heavy metal pollution in the water and sediments. It also showed an increase in these pollutants in the muscles of green eels and mullet, in addition to a significant rise in organic pollutants, leading to a deterioration in the water quality of Khor Al-Zubair.
The study recommended the necessity of enforcing existing environmental laws and establishing an environmental monitoring unit to reduce pollutants in the waters of Khor Al-Zubair.
