The Renewable Energy and Sustainability Committee at the University of Basra held its first meeting. This committee is one of the specialized scientific and administrative committees established in Iraqi universities to support scientific research policies and promote the gradual transition from traditional energy sources to clean and renewable energy, in line with national and international trends in sustainable development.

The meeting discussed the tasks and responsibilities of the Renewable Energy and Sustainability Committee, its operational mechanisms, and the development of a strategic plan to implement initiatives and programs related to renewable energy and sustainability within the university, serving both the university environment and the local community.

The meeting also addressed the importance of supporting scientific research and innovation in renewable energy, developing academic curricula to keep pace with global scientific advancements, and implementing sustainability projects on campus to reduce the carbon footprint and enhance resource efficiency.

The committee emphasized the need to strengthen local and international partnerships with government institutions, the private sector, and international organizations. It also stressed the importance of adopting community awareness and education programs to promote a culture of clean energy and sustainability among students and the wider community, while establishing clear evaluation and monitoring criteria to ensure the effectiveness of initiatives and the achievement of their objectives.

At the conclusion of the meeting, it was confirmed that this meeting marked the beginning of the committee's work, with subsequent periodic meetings planned to disseminate the concept of renewable energy and sustainability across all colleges and centers at the University of Basra. This will enhance the university's leading role in serving sustainable development at both the local and national levels.
