University of Basra organizes a scientific workshop on overfishing: environmental challenges and societal repercussions

The College of Agriculture at the University of Basra organized a scientific seminar on overfishing: environmental challenges and societal repercussions.

The seminar, presented by Dr. Amjad Kadhim Rasen, aimed to address the current state of fishing in the marshes and Basra Governorate, and the associated environmental and economic challenges.

The seminar covered the most significant problems resulting from overfishing, including the depletion of fish stocks, the decline in biodiversity, and the increase in conflicts among fishermen, in addition to the health impacts resulting from the use of illegal fishing methods.

The lecture also highlighted a field project implemented in northern Basra, which included several phases: field surveys, awareness campaigns, support for fish stocks, and monitoring and evaluation, with the goal of achieving environmental sustainability and enhancing community security.

The seminar recommended the importance of disseminating environmental awareness and adopting sustainable fishing methods to preserve fish stocks.
