Professor Dr. Sarmad Ghazi Mohammed Al-Shawi, Dean of the College of Agriculture at the University of Basra, along with several faculty members, participated in the scientific symposium entitled "Protecting Maternal Health in the Context of Climate Change." The symposium was organized by CARE Iraq as part of the "Maternal Care – Phase II: Protecting Maternal Health in Iraq and Promoting Conscious Adaptation to Climate Change" project, and was held on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at the Grand Millennium Hotel in Basra.

The symposium was attended by representatives from governmental and academic institutions, civil society organizations, and healthcare providers. Discussions focused on reviewing the project's key achievements and lessons learned from its implementation, as well as exploring policies and procedures to enhance the resilience of maternal health services in the face of climate change impacts. The aim was to contribute to the development of future programs and strengthen partnerships among relevant stakeholders.

The College of Agriculture's participation stems from its academic and community role in supporting initiatives related to sustainable development and climate change adaptation, and in fostering cooperation with national and international organizations to serve the local community and contribute to finding scientific solutions to environmental and health challenges.

The Dean of the College emphasized the importance of integrated efforts between academic institutions, government sectors, and civil society organizations in addressing the challenges posed by climate change, particularly those related to protecting the health of the most vulnerable groups, raising public awareness, and supporting scientific research that contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
