A doctoral thesis at the University of Basra examines the monitoring and control of the red palm weevil in Basra Governorate.

A doctoral dissertation at the College of Agriculture, University of Basra, explored "Monitoring and Controlling Red Palm Weevil Infestation."

The dissertation, presented by researcher Sanaa Sakhr Abbas, aimed to conduct a field survey of infestations in the Safwan and Zubair districts, monitor the insect's spread using pheromone traps, study the impact of environmental factors, evaluate traps, pheromones, and systemic pesticides, as well as conduct a preliminary record of parasitic nematodes and test their efficacy.

The dissertation included a study of the limited infestation in Safwan and Zubair, with the insect being active year-round and the number of captured females being higher.

The dissertation recommended adopting the burrowing trap, injecting pesticides, and employing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to map infestation hotspots and accurately guide control efforts.
