A doctoral dissertation at the College of Agriculture, University of Basra, investigated "A Survey of Fish Breeding and Nursery Sites in Two Different Environments in Basra Governorate."

The dissertation, presented by researcher Atour Abdul Karim Taher, aimed to assess the variation in fish population composition and its relationship to environmental indicators in the Shatt al-Arab waterway, specifically in the Al-Haritha and Khor al-Zubair areas.

The results showed that salinity was the most influential factor, with Khor al-Zubair exhibiting a higher abundance of marine, estuarine, and larval species compared to Al-Haritha, thus reinforcing its role in supporting fish stocks.

The study recommended preserving estuarine environments, reducing pollution and human pressures, and continuing environmental monitoring programs to ensure sustainability.
