The College of Agriculture at the University of Basrah organized a seminar titled "Learning Behavior in Insects: From Molecular Mechanisms to Field Applications."
The seminar, presented by Dr. Muslim Ashour Abdul-Wahid, aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of insect learning behavior. It covered everything from fundamental molecular and neurobiological mechanisms and the classification of various learning types to the practical application of this knowledge within Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs.
The session addressed the concept of ethology (the study of animal behavior) and its relationship with physiology, neurobiology, psychology, and ecology.
It also highlighted that learning is not merely the acquisition of experience but an adaptive strategy shaped by natural selection pressures. Furthermore, the seminar discussed the success—and failure—of natural enemies in locating hosts in large-scale field settings, as well as how an understanding of habituation can be leveraged to overcome pest resistance and prevent adaptation to pesticides.
