Under the title "Human Resilience and Biodiversity in the Marshes of Mesopotamia Project," a workshop entitled "National and Regional Dialogue for the Sustainability of the Marshes of Mesopotamia" was held in Basra Governorate (Manawi Pasha Hotel) on October 10, 2026.
The workshop was organized in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Bahr Al-Uloom Charitable Foundation, and the Al-Alamein Center for Environmental, Climate Change, and Water Studies.
The College of Agriculture at the University of Basra participated prominently, represented by its Dean, Professor Dr. Sarmad Ghazi Mohammed Al-Shawi, and a number of faculty members, particularly from the Department of Fisheries and Marine Resources. The workshop sessions were moderated by Professor Dr. Abdul Hamid Mohammed Jawad Al-Obaidi. The workshop aimed to establish a shared national framework for the revitalization of the marshes, unify understanding of the water and environmental situation, identify the challenges of flooding, water quality, and habitats, pinpoint institutional obstacles, select national priorities to support the livelihoods of local communities, and enhance Iraqi-Iranian cooperation in environmental monitoring and the restoration of the Hawizeh and Al-Adhaim marshes.
The workshop concluded with a closing session to formulate recommendations and develop a realistic and sustainable follow-up program to address the environmental situation of the marshes in Iraq.
