University of Basra organizes a workshop on the establishment and operation of closed systems for fish farming.

The Aquaculture Unit at the College of Agriculture, University of Basra, in cooperation with the Basra Training and Extension Center, held a workshop entitled "Establishing and Operating Closed-Loop Fish Farming Systems."

The workshop aimed to present sustainable solutions to address the challenges of aquaculture in Iraq, such as relying on the Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) to cope with water scarcity and increasing salinity.

The workshop, presented by several professors from the College of Agriculture, covered RAS systems – opportunities and challenges – and explained the current state and challenges of aquaculture in Iraq. It detailed the basic components and functions of the system (such as mechanical and biological filters and aeration), discussed the advantages of the system as a solution to salinity in Basra, its technical and economic challenges, and its future opportunities (such as alternative energy and smart systems).

The workshop also addressed water recycling systems for aquaculture, explained self-cleaning pond techniques and water treatment, including foam fractionation for organic matter and ozone sterilization.
