The College of Agriculture at the University of Basra organized a seminar on "The Red Palm Weevil and the Use of Phostoxin in its Control."
The seminar, presented by lecturer Mahmoud Awda Jaafar, aimed to raise awareness among pest control teams about the dangers of Phostoxin during control operations. Phostoxin is highly toxic when it reacts with moisture, releasing a gas called pH3. Its danger lies in its extreme toxicity; it inhibits the electron transport chain in mitochondria and disrupts the cytochrome c oxidase enzyme, leading to a collapse in energy production and subsequently rapid heart and lung failure.
The seminar included an informative article by Professor Azzam Al-Nuaimi and a video by Dr. Shaker Al-Zaidy containing advice for orchard owners and pest control teams. The seminar also compared traditional pest control methods with the modern model based on integrated pest management.
