The College of Agriculture at the University of Basra, represented by teaching assistant Dr. Farqad Murtadha Al-Mousawi, participated in the "Waves for Climate" event, organized by the Al-Taqwa Association for Women and Children's Rights with support from Mercy Corps International. This participation comes within the framework of joint efforts to support women farmers and empower them to confront climate change.
The college's participation reflects its active partnership with the Al-Taqwa Association. The college previously provided training to 20 female farmers from Al-Qurnah District on protected agriculture techniques in greenhouses, with the aim of helping them adapt to climate change and improve their agricultural production.
During the event, several officials delivered speeches emphasizing the importance of this cooperation. For his part, the Assistant Governor of Basra for Agricultural Affairs, Hassan Zahir Al-Najjar, emphasized that "women farmers are essential partners in achieving food security and strengthening the local economy, and supporting them in confronting climate change is an investment in Basra's future."
Mr. Jaafar Al-Hajjaj, Chairman of the Organizations Committee of the Basra Provincial Council, also noted that "the success of any agricultural project requires concerted action between governmental institutions, academic institutions, and civil society organizations, and the Waves for Climate Project is a model of this cooperation."
The session was attended by a number of experts and specialists, including Ms. Enas Ismail, Director of the Women and Children's Affairs Department at the Basra Governorate Diwan, where fruitful discussions took place on ways to enhance the role of rural women in addressing current environmental challenges.
