A master's thesis at the College of Agriculture, University of Basra, explored "Isolation and Identification of Fungi Associated with the Hairy Grain Beetle (Khapra kernel) and the Possibility of Biological Control."
The thesis, presented by researcher Inas Asmar Ali, aimed to protect wheat grains from infestation by the insect and prepare them for planting as suitable seeds. It also focused on isolating and morphologically identifying the fungi, confirming their genera and species through genetic analysis.
The thesis included a study of the insect's threat and the damage it causes through direct consumption of cereal grains, resulting in reduced nutritional value and contamination of the grains with its excrement.
The results showed varying effectiveness of fungal filtrate in controlling the insect, without negatively impacting wheat germination.
The thesis recommended the use of fungi within integrated pest management programs as a safe alternative to chemical pesticides.
