Professor Dr. Haider Subaih Shino, a faculty member at the College of Agriculture, University of Basra, participated as a member of the committee that discussed the Master's thesis of researcher Zainab Khalaf Karim in the Department of Life Sciences at the College of Science. Her thesis was titled "The Effect of Photostress on the Growth and Production of Secondary Compounds in Some Medicinal Plants."
The thesis aimed to identify the defense and protection mechanisms employed by plants to mitigate the damage caused by ultraviolet radiation. It also investigated the effect of UV-B radiation on growth indicators and certain chemical compounds in three medicinal plants: fenugreek, hollyhock, and neem.
The study recommended further investigation into the long-term effects of this radiation on plant metabolism, testing the biological activity of new compounds as antioxidants and antimicrobials, exploring their pharmaceutical and agricultural applications, utilizing UV-B radiation as a controlled stimulant for chemical content, and including other medicinal plants for comparison. It also recommended determining the optimal radiation intensity for the production of secondary metabolites.
