Today, the Dean of the College of Agriculture at the University of Basra, Professor Dr. Sarmed Ghazi Muhammad Al-Shawi, accompanied by a number of college professors, participated in an event organized by Tearfund entitled "Enhancing Resilience to Climate Change in Some Climate Security Hotspots in Southern Iraq." This event marked the final stage of several projects supervised by the College of Agriculture's consulting office, with the participation of a select group of college professors.
These projects were funded by GIZ and implemented by civil society organizations in Basra Governorate and southern Iraq. The College of Agriculture played a major role in supervision, follow-up, and evaluation, in line with the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to make universities and colleges open to serve the community.
During the implementation period, the Advisory Office at the College of Agriculture organized training and development courses for farmers, issued special curricula for agricultural training, monitored the work of implementing organizations, and submitted final reports evaluating project progress and results. These projects aimed to reduce water waste, prevent overfishing, and implement environmentally friendly projects by producing fodder using Azolla.
This step represents a pioneering experiment within the framework of cooperation between the University of Basra, represented by the College of Agriculture, the local government, international and local organizations, and the Basra Agriculture Directorate and the Basra Environment Directorate.
The college aspires to implement larger and more diverse projects in the coming period, providing direct service to the community and farmers in Basra Governorate and other southern regions.
