The College of Agriculture at the University of Basra, represented by its Dean, Professor Dr. Sarmed Ghazi Muhammad Al-Shawi, and a number of faculty members, along with representatives from the Universities of Dhi Qar and Mosul, participated in the closing ceremony of the AgrIraq program at the French Institute in Baghdad, in the presence of the French Ambassador to Iraq.
The program, a partnership between the French Embassy and the Agence des Universités de la Francophonie (AUF), was officially launched in October 2023 at the University of Basra.
The project aims to enhance scientific research and academic training in the field of agriculture and sustainable irrigation, contributing to addressing the challenges of climate change and efficient water resource management.
During its implementation period, the program organized scientific missions and field workshops in southern Iraq (Basra and Dhi Qar) between 2023 and 2024, focusing on developing academic curricula and exchanging expertise between Iraqi and French universities, in addition to establishing a research cooperation network between Iraqi professors and researchers and Francophone experts.
The conclusion of this program represents a significant step toward a long-term strategic partnership between Iraqi and French universities, aimed at modernizing the agricultural sector and adopting sustainable water management solutions that serve economic and social development in Iraq.
